A-Z Challenge: Tragedy

Tragedy

Yes, this is a day late. It’s late because I didn’t want to write it. I’ve been putting it off, but it won’t go away. That has to be the worst thing about being a writer. If something wants to be written, it won’t leave until you’ve written it. I suppose artists of various genres have the same problem. There were several letters last week that I thought about using, but I managed to come up with things that I “just had to use” for those letters. This one could wait. Then, there was S. I could have used Sadness, but I didn’t want to. I’m not even entirely sure what I’m going to write today; I just know I’m not allowed to put it off anymore.

Sometimes it seems like horrible things are happening all around us. Last week, it was the Boston Marathon bombing, then the West, Texas explosion. And did you catch the news about the earthquake in China? We’ve got terrorists in the Middle East, bird flu in Asia, and just this morning, a building in Bangladesh collapsed, killing almost 100 people. Add the “everyday” tragedies of one-on-one murders, fatal car accidents, fires, and other sad events, and it can be enough to make you want to hide in your house with the TV and radio off for…ever.

My neighbors' home recently burned down. Tragedy is all around us every day.

I don’t recommend hiding in your house, but turning off the TV is probably a very good idea. When you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the bad news in the world (or in your own city), take some time to focus on the good things. There really are more good people than bad out there. There is more happiness and love than hatred and selfishness. Sometimes you have to look for it because – for whatever reason – negativity screams louder. But it’s there.

So go hug your kids. Snuggle with your pet. Call your mom or your sister or your best friend and spend some time talking about silly stuff. You too, guys. Go do happy guy stuff (whatever that is). Seems someone, somewhere said, “Don’t worry. Be happy.” I think that is very good advice.

A-Z Challenge: Shoes

Shoes

If you’re a walker or a runner, you know you need at least two pair of good shoes so you can let your shoes rest for at least a day between walks/runs. Unpacking over the past few weeks, I have discovered just how many “extra” pairs I have. I have “nice” shoes, too – more than I need, I’m sure (although a girl can never have too many pairs of boots). But I think I have enough walking shoes to keep me in rotation for a little while. Ya think?

A-Z Challenge: Reading

a-to-z-letters-r

Reading

Come on, you can’t possibly be surprised that I’d use “reading” for R. I’ve already written a post about how I’ve always been a reader and how I can’t understand people who don’t like to read. (And I didn’t realize I wrote that back in May 2011. I just sifted through a few hundred posts and now I’m all nostalgic and stuff. *sniff*) So this is just about my kids’ reading habits. You’ve seen some pictures of my books stacked everywhere. The boys are just as bad. They each have a 3-shelf bookcase full of their own books. Plus they have books all over the house. They’re not even here and Bennett left a Garfield comic book in Jeffrey’s chair, and one of them left a Captain Underpants book on the dining room table. (Bennett can’t read, but those books are illustrated, so he’s “read” them over and over again.)

They carry books around with them wherever we go. At bedtime, I read them a book, then Bennett nags Jeffrey until he reads to him from a chapter book. I’m so glad that both of my kids love books, but I’m also very thankful for our local library. Otherwise, they would be developing an expensive habit. LOL

This is my favorite picture of Bennett reading. I’ve shared it on Facebook, but I’ve never posted it on the blog. (I had to search for the picture, and oh my goodness, speaking of nostalgia – cute-baby pictures overload.) This was in August 2010, so he had just turned two. He really did fall asleep “reading”, and that’s exactly where the book landed. I didn’t move anything until after I took the picture.

A-Z Challenge: Quesadillas

a-to-z-letters-q

Quesadillas

These are our version of quesadillas. We have to use small tortillas because I need gluten-free tortillas, and all the big ones at our grocery store are flour. The only ones made of corn are tiny. So instead of folding, I use one on top and another on bottom. We throw in cheese, chicken, ground beef, bell peppers, and onions. We usually make these the night after homemade-pizza night so we can use up the toppings we had left over. I cook them over medium heat for about five minutes on each side. I use either a griddle pan or a round frying pan, depending on what’s unpacked at the time. 🙂 Serve with sour cream and salsa and you’re ready to go.

Peculiar

Yeah, I’m really stretching now. You almost got a picture of a puzzle. What the heck… You can still have a picture of a puzzle.

You also get this video of my peculiar children. Jeffrey (11) decided to play the “silent game”. So they would know when to start, he would count to three. Every time he said, “Three,” Bennett (4) would bust out in giggles. After I took this video (audio, really, because I didn’t want them to know I was recording), Jeffrey tried saying, “Three thousand, three hundred thirty three,” and Bennett almost had a giggling fit.
B: I’m ticklish!
J: The number three tickles you?
B: Yes!

A-Z Challenge: Office Space

a-to-z-letters-o

Office Space (one of my decluttering reports)

No, not that Office Space (though I do have a Swingline stapler – it’s black, though). My new office space. I not only have to have my desk in my room, but desks for both boys. There just isn’t room anywhere else in the house without putting one desk in each room, and I can’t help them with their work or supervise their computer time that way. So three desks and a printer table have to fit in there. So far, we’re up to two desks. I still have to get Jeffrey a desk. We have one picked out, but I don’t have room for it yet. Here’s what the space looks like so far. I’m not sure I took a picture of that corner in my “before” pictures, but you can see part of that area in the other pictures.

This is part of the same wall. The outlet that you see on the right side of the bottom pic is between the table and the school desk in the top pic.

A-Z Challenge: New Desk

a-to-z-letters-n

New Desk

For longer than I care to think about, I’ve been using a utility table as a desk. I finally bought a desk last night. It was a $100 desk that I got for $50, new, so I’m pretty happy. 😀 (And I assembled it all by myself, complete with keyboard shelf and pencil drawer.) I’m making progress on the decluttering, and soon I’ll have pictures of this desk in the bedroom – along with the three loaded bookshelves…
