“But I’ve Never Had a Twinkie!”

Sooo, you may be a health-food freak if this is the response from your kids when you tell them that “the Twinkie company” is going out of business.

Jeffrey has had one, several years ago at a family reunion. My dad (aren’t grandparents usually the culprits?) gave him a Twinkie. Having never seen one before, he requested a plate and fork. (He was five or six.) He doesn’t remember that, though, and has insisted for several years that he’s never had a Twinkie. Bennett really has never had one. I’ve had a few Twinkies in my time, but I preferred the CupCakes (Chocolate, of course. Did you know they’re making strawberry CupCakes now? Well, not now.)

I wanted them to have the experience, and really, eating one Twinkie is not going to doom them to diabetes and obesity. I did try to find an individual pack at a convenience store. I guess they either never sold them there or just don’t anymore. I found oodles of Little Debbies, though. Maybe that’s why Hostess went bankrupt. Poor market share. Anyway…

I ended up buying a box of ten at the grocery store. I gave the boys one half each, and tried to give away the others at the park. No one, parents or kids, wanted one. (These were my friends, not strangers who would be freaked out about some lady wandering around the park handing out endangered snack food.) Hmmm. Maybe that’s why Hostess went bankrupt. I brought the box home last night to a house full of teenage boys. I saved one Twinkie for my boys to share later and left the box out and told the big boys they could eat the Twinkies. I get up this morning to find only three missing. Really? There were at least twice that many boys here last night. When even teenage boys won’t eat something, you could have a problem.

Regardless, my boys would have eaten the whole box if I let them. I gave them their Twinkies one at a time so I could record their “first bite of Twinkie”. I think it’s safe to say they liked them.
